Volunteer with MLK Friends
MLK Friends organizes a wide range of activities and there are always ways for you to get involved! Please check out our committees and contact the chairperson directly if you’re interested in finding out more. Please don’t be shy!
Our meetings are held at 8am on the first Friday of every month, in the first floor conference room with a virtual option. Email [email protected] for more information.
A list of our positions and committees:
President | Actively seeking our next President. Facilitates meetings, sets meeting agendas with input from the Board and ExCom, communication. Ideally we are seeking to have two co-Presidents to share duties. |
Secretary | Tracks meeting minutes, helps prepare agendas, facilitates communication. |
Treasurer | Manages finances, prepares budget, reviews funding requests from funding request form with the Board. |
Fundraising Committee | Organizes and executes month-long Annual Appeal, MLK Friends’ major fundraiser of the year (Halloween-Thanksgiving). Coordinates all PR/marketing, communications for this event, and follows up with stewardship. |
Website Content Guru | Updates MLK Friends Website with current content to inform and engage parents. |
Communications Team | Encourages parents to engage with MLK Friends, promotes enrichment activities for the MLK Community, supports families with transition to MLK, helps build connections inside and outside of classroom. |
Events Champion | Liaison role and champion to leverage best practice on planning and communication. Ref: MLK Friends Operations Handbook, MLK Friends Calendar |
Book Fair Committee | Lead yearly event with Scholastic and Chinese book sellers, support Teacher-wish lists for classroom library. |
Dr King Day, and Black History Month Committee | Lead program planning activities, enhance student knowledge about African-American history, link to School’s core values |
Asian-American History Month Committee | Lead program planning activities, enhance student knowledge about Asian-American history, link to School’s core values |
Family Dance Committee | Lead family dance planning activities and build community. Inaugural dance held Mar 2019. |
Scholarship Committee | Facilitate discussion on MLK Friends Scholarships, and liaison to Community School for Summer programs |
Teacher Appreciation Week | Coordinate teacher/staff appreciation week breakfast/lunch, thank you notes from students |
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Committee | Provide insight and advice into promoting diversity and inclusion, develop strategies that foster greater participation and ensure members from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and abilities. |
Grant writing Committee | Develop calendar to track grant opportunities to fund arts enrichment, grant writing, monitor progress and reporting post grant. |
Author Visit Coordinator | Actively seeking someone to coordinate annual Author Visits to our school. Responsibilities include: – promoting the event, including printing/posting flyers – coordinating book pre-sales with Porter Square Books – communicating with parents, sending email and backpack reminders – communicating with librarian, principal, and the author to coordinate visit schedule – working with school librarian and the author on the day of event to make sure it runs smoothly – documenting event Perks: – you will get to meet super cool authors, and to help determine who we invite next! – 2018: GEORGE O’CONNOR, bestselling author of The Olympians graphic novel series. – 2019: GRACE LIN, winner of every award available to children’s authors.
